Research Data Capture & Management Environment

.Institute for Research & Development in Health and Social Care

Welcome to the Epidemiological Research Data Capture & Management Environment (DCME).

DCME is a secure resource for digital research data collection which uses REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) licensed through the REDCap Consortium at Vanderbilt University.

REDCap is used by over 1500 institutions world wide.

The Institute for Research & Development in Health and Social Care joined the REDCap Consortium in 2019.

REDCap can be used for building and managing online surveys and databases.

REDCap is a browser-based software created which requires no programming, networking or database experience.

Data entry operators or people taking an online survey enter data in a web browser from any remote location with a secure internet connection. The data is stored centrally in a secure database. All traffic between the web browser and the application is encrypted.

It allows multi-site access for projects with researchers working  from multiples sites and institutions.

Researchers are able to rapidly and easily develop online surveys, data entry forms, for collecting data, and data validation.

Supports a broad range of project types from simple surveys through complex longitudinal studies.

REDCap allows different members of a research team to have different levels of access to surveys and data within projects.

REDCap includes a complete audit trail which records all operations on the data providing accountability.

For additional information, visit the REDCap website.

Who can use this service?

• Employees of the Institute for Research & Development in Health and Social Care may access REDCap following approval.

• Academics from other institutions may access if involved in collaborative research with the Institute for Research & Development in Health and Social Care.

How much does this service cost?

• Use of REDCap is available at no cost to the investigator.

What are the advantages of using REDCap?

• No up-front cost.

• Easy to design, develop, and use data collection forms.

• Screen layouts are clear and simple to navigate.

• Audit trails for tracking the history of data entry and revision.

• Data can be exported to work with Excel or popular statistical packages such as SPSS, Stata, SAS and R.

• Mobile app for offline use

What do I need to do before obtaining a user account

• All human participant research requires ethical approval from a recognised Institutional Review Board.

• Permission and approval from the Scientific Committee of the Institute for Research & Development in Health and Social Care.

How do I request for a new Project

1. Complete the online project request form (*in development).

The form collects basic details of the project which are necessary to create the project. It may be filled in by any member of the study team on behalf of the Principal Investigator.

2. Project approval and delegation form.

The Principal Investigator is emailed a form which authorises us to create the project. And allows the Principal Investigator to assign administrative rights to additional users.

Do I need to install software?

You do not need to install this software.

How do I get support?

The Section of Epidemiology, IRD provides support for all IRD REDCap projects.

Once you are provided with a user account. You will be required to

• Build the entry forms for the study instruments which have received ethical approval.

• Collect all the data necessary .

• Assistance may be available upon reasonable request.
